Sandy has been a trial lawyer since 1992. He has practiced litigation and alternate dispute resolution on behalf of his clients. Sandy’s practice is to seek to negotiate out of Court settlements for his clients when appropriate and to litigate those claims that require a Court based resolution.
With over 30 years of experience, Sandy has attended to thousands of examinations for discovery, and hundreds of mediations and Court applications including trials and appeals. Sandy has appeared as counsel in the Provincial Court of British Columbia, the Supreme Court of British Columbia and the Court of Appeal of British Columbia. Sandy has also appeared as counsel before a number of Administrative Tribunals, some of which no longer exist, including the Employment Standards Tribunal, Human Rights Tribunal, Liquor Appeal Board and Motor Carrier Commission.
During his long career, Sandy has acted as counsel for parties in a wide variety of legal disputes, including:
- Family law matters;
- Commercial litigation matters;
- Estate litigation matters;
- Class action proceedings;
- Employment law matters;
- First Nations Treaty negotiations;
- Professional negligence claims;
- Personal injury claims; and
- Administrative law matters.
In addition to working as a lawyer, Sandy has also been accredited by the Law Society of British Columbia as a Family Law Mediator. While there is no training required for most types of mediators, Family Law mediation is the exception. Accreditation as a Family Law mediator requires successful completion of a formal, in depth training program.
Sandy’s Family Law practice involves representing parties in all types of Family Law disputes. He is available to assist either party in a Family Law dispute as their legal counsel. Sandy is also available to assist both parties in a Family Law dispute as an impartial mediator. Once Sandy acts as counsel for one of the individual parties to a dispute, he cannot act as a mediator in that dispute. Sandy’s Family Law mediation website can be found at www.kovacsfamilylawmediation.ca.
Sandy conducted his first Family Law trial in the early 1990s. Since that time, the law has evolved, and the legislation has changed. What has not changed is the skill and tenacity required to conduct effective negotiations and, if those fail, the litigation required to achieve a resolution.
Sandy and his wife have been married for over 28 years. Together, they have raised two daughters who are now strong, confident adults. Sandy believes that being a father and husband has taught him the patience and empathy that he brings to his law and mediation practice.
